WATER CONSERVATION ALERT – GSC APPEAL TO THE COMMUNITY AHEAD OF HOT WEATHER

For immediate release.

As temperatures reach the high thirties this week, Gilgandra Shire Council (GSC) is appealing to residents of Gilgandra township to continue their efforts to reduce water consumption.

One of the main water pumps at the Water Treatment Plant has failed. As a result, the township of Gilgandra is now relying on a single pump to transfer water from the treatment plant to the reservoir and onto residents during these hot days.

General Manager David Neeves urges residents to continue to reduce their water consumptions,

“The only pump is not keeping up with demand. Normally, the reservoirs will hold 23 metres (height) of water but the reservoirs are currently at 15 metres and gradually dropping. Many residents will be starting to see the impacts on their water pressure.”

“Whilst there are currently no enforced water restrictions, I urge the community to voluntarily reduce consumption. With a week of hot temperatures forecast, GSC is very concerned that without a concerted effort by all, water levels will continue to decrease.”

“The failed pump is a specialty item, purpose built for our water treatment plant and is expected to arrive, be installed, and operating within 2 weeks’ time. There are a lot of hot days between then and now, so we are appealing to the Community to reduce their water consumption. The need for water restrictions will be assessed daily.”

Please note, that Ernie Knight, McGrane Oval, Hunter Park, Cooee Lodge and Retirement Village all have their own alternate bore water supply.
