Gilgandra’s connection to its Indigenous community and its local waterway will be strengthened thanks to a project funded by the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Acceleration Fund.
Minister for Western NSW Dugald Saunders said $305,450 has been allocated to Gilgandra Shire Council to develop The Meeting Place, an Aboriginal experience that will provide a place of connection in the region.
“Gilgandra already has so much going for it as a town, and this meeting place project will provide another reason for people to stop and learn about the wonderful history of this region,” Mr Saunders said.
“Stories will be told in the Joy Trudgett Gallery, a yarn circle and fire pit will be added for night-time story-telling, and a garden, art and educational area will allow it to be a really hands-on experience for visitors.
“The Meeting Place will be located along the banks of the Castlereagh River, and it will be connected to the Windmill Walk, making it something that truly represents the Gilgandra region.”
Gilgandra Shire Council mayor Doug Batten said the region is looking forward to welcoming new and returning visitors to region once The Meeting Place is completed.
“We’re thankful to the NSW Government for the support of this project which will see visitors, locals and Aboriginal communities come together to create connections and inclusivity in a centre that is truly unique to Gilgandra,” he said.
“People can learn about our past, history and present, enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes in the cultural precinct and hear and see the stories of our Aboriginal heritage.
“Gilgandra is known as a “meeting place” between three Aboriginal nations - Wiradjuri, Kamilaroi and Wailwan - and we proudly continue to be a meeting place for family, friends, locals and visitors alike.”
The Meeting Place is a $386,299 project, with the NSW Government contribution of $305,450 being complemented by an $80,849 investment from Gilgandra Shire Council.
