Gilgandra Shire Council (GSC) is pleased to announce its involvement in the 2025 Community Art Exhibition and competition called Waste 2 Art – a FREE celebration of the reuse and recycling of waste.

Each year there is a specific waste item, guiding the theme of the creations and changing the ways we look at waste >>>

2025 is the Year of Toys

The Year of Toys: Think broad and think big. Toys can include magazines, comics, books, dress-ups, costumes, arts and crafts and much more. While there is a theme to guide the entries, that doesn’t mean that you have to use this material in your artwork - however, this year entrants will be asked to outline where their materials come from. NetWaste will not be accepting entries into the Regionals if they contain any purchased craft materials such as plastic eyes, glitter, pipe cleaners and foam modelling material etc. as that is against the heart of Waste 2 Art. Instead, get creative with materials already destined for the waste or recycling bin. The only new materials you should be buying are materials to put the works together such as glues, pins and paper tape.

The Waste 2 Art competition invites and welcomes schools, community groups and individuals to turn their rubbish into art! There are a range of categories to encompass primary, secondary school students, community members and professional artists alike. The challenge is to look at waste differently, to change our perceptions about waste through creativity, and gives entrants the chance to explore and share their “waste reduction message”.

The project will begin with a Community Workshop. GSC would like to invite all interested individual or groups of community members living in our Region to come along to the initial, introductory Community Workshop to share ideas and create.

When: Tuesday, 25 February 2025
Time: 4:00pm – 5:30pm
Where: Gilgandra Youth Services

Come along to hear more about the competition, have some fun and, if you already have an idea of what you want to do, you can take advantage of this workshop to gain some advice from Bill Tink from NetWaste, along with some local creative minds. This workshop will be offered free of charge to anyone who lives in the Gilgandra Region, and entry to the local Waste 2 Art Exhibition and Competition is free.

There will be some time between this initial Community Workshop and the Local Exhibition of created masterpieces - held in May 2025. This exhibition will be judged, and lead to the wining artworks being sent on to feature in the Regional Exhibition, held in September 2025 in Dubbo.

The 2025 Regional Showcase will be held at the Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo. The Regional Showcase will offer cash prizes to the total value of nearly $11,500 thanks to our generous sponsors, Sims Metal.
