Flying Foxes

A group of around 650 Little Red Flying-Foxes (Pteropus scapulatus) recently set up a temporary camp in Gilgandra Swimming Pool and Hunter Park areas.
Flying Foxes are a native mammal species of northern and eastern Australia and they migrate over long distances. They are a keystone species and essential for the dispersal of native seeds in the Australian bush.
Given their protected species status, a Flying Fox Management Plan must be developed to identify possible management options of a flying fox camp.
The Community Survey has now closed, with the feedback to be considered as part of the Management Plan development.
