Inland Rail

From “Pipe Dream” to Reality, the Inland Rail is coming through Gilgandra Shire

The Federal Government budget announcement that it will be investing $8.4 Billion for the construction of the inland land rail transitions the project from what many have described as a “pipe dream” now to reality.

“The Federal Governments investment commitment to constructing the inland rail will result in mixed emotions for our residents.” Says Mayor, Cr Doug Batten

“Whilst the inland rail will impacted upon many land holders along the route, it does present a real and significant economic development opportunity for our Shire and the broader region.  The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has done a reasonable job in keeping landholders informed and has provided opportunities for landholders to raise their concerns and issues. There are many people that have been very sceptical and dismissed the inland rail as a pipe dream which has been a concern for Council but they will now have to become engaged to ensure they get the best outcome for themselves.”

“Council acknowledges and has been advocating to the ARTC and Federal Government directly, that they must seriously consider the impact the inland rail will have to landholders such as property severance, loss of productive agricultural land and direct impacts on homes and farm infrastructure and we will continue to advocate for support for affected landholders. On the other hand Council must seize this opportunity for the economic injection into our Shire and the opportunities its presents.

Gilgandra Shire is one of few shire along the proposed inland rail route where around 100km of new rail will be constructed based on current plans and yet to be confirmed alignments. Across the whole 1700km route, around 500km new rail will be constructed. The Narromine to Narrabri section is approximately 300km of new track with Gilgandra Shire in the middle.

Council in its draft budget has allocated an additional $50,000 per year over the next three years towards attracting and developing existing businesses and new economic development opportunities.

 Cr Batten added

“It’s an exciting time for our region, the flow on benefits to our shire are obvious during construction stages but it’s the longer term benefits during the operation of the line we need to better understand so we make for the most of this opportunity.

“The Federal Governments announcement provide $472.2 million over four years from 2017–18 to establish a Regional Growth Fund is also well received.

The Regional Growth Fund will include $272.2 million to provide grants of $10.0 million or more for major transformational projects which support long-term economic growth and create jobs in regions undergoing structural adjustment. In addition, the Regional Growth Fund includes $200 million for the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) for four years from 2017–18. It is the Governments intention to allow more regional communities across Australia to benefit from the fund so it’s now up to us to see how much of this pie we can secure for development in our shire.”
