Community Recycling Centre

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has commenced a program to establish a network of Community Recycling Centres (CRC’s) across NSW. The primary aim of this program is to provide a means for households in NSW to safely dispose of materials that have the potential to be a hazard to the environment or to public health, or, are problematic to safe waste and recycling collection and disposal. CRC’s are designed and operated to temporarily store these materials safely until they can be recycled or disposed of appropriately.

The materials being targeted by the EPA for collection at Community Recycling Centres are:

  • Paint (water based, oil based and other paint types)
  • Waste oil (including motor oil and other types of oil)
  • Batteries (including lead acid automotive batteries and other types of batteries used by households)
  • Domestic gas cylinders (typically LPG and other types)
  • Conventional tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (and other types)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Smoke detectors

Householders are able to deposit household waste problem materials at any facility that is part of the program, regardless of the Council area in which they reside. Materials accepted from commercial or business operators will not form part of this program.

The objectives of this licence are to:

  • prevent as far as practicable sewage overflows and sewage treatment plant bypasses;
  • require proper and efficient management of the system to minimise harm to the environment and public health; and
  • require practical measures to be taken to protect the environment and public health from sewage overflows and sewage treatment plant effluent.

Data required under the licence is published in PDF format, and includes licence details, monitoring points, pollutants and units of measure, monitoring frequency, limits imposed by the licence, any other relevant conditions imposed by the licence, and dates of sampling, data acquisition and publication.
